His father died in 1802 and, though at one time a prosperous farmer, the difficult times since the Revolution had left the estate insolvent. His mother was then left in a precarious situation: orphaned and widowed in the space of four years with seven children under the age of 10. There is no doubt that she received ample support from her late husband’s twin brother Jonathan and her mother-in-law Mehitable (Emerson) Bradley; for, in spite of the doubtless pressing economic circumstances, Thomas graduated from Bradford Academy in 1814 and went on to join the Haverhill Light Infantry from 1816 to 1818. By 1821 he had established a business in Portland, ME, where, in association with John Dow run the merchant firm of Bradley & Dow, located at Murphy’s Row, 6 India Street, dedicated to the trade in “English Goods” and, later, in “Dry Goods.” The selection of Portland was no doubt related to the presence there of his first cousin Charles, the son of Jonathan and Sally (Ayer) Bradley, also a noted merchant in dry goods. It is here that he probably met Lucy Ann Sutton, the eldest daughter of Captain Richard and Lucy (Lord) Sutton, whom he would marry on 26 June 1827 in Portsmouth, NH. This is also the last year that “Bradley & Dow” is mentioned on the Portland City Directories. Soon after their marriage, Thomas and Lucy joined Captain Sutton and his family and removed to Buenos Aires, Argentina were they were to remain the rest of their lives. Richard Sutton and Thomas Osgood Bradley are listed as passengers on the “Jon,” arriving in Buenos Aires in October of 1829. By 1846, Thomas had established an Inn on Tucumán Street, near the Port of Buenos Aires, and a wool brokerage business that would eventually be managed by his son Richard.

Thomas married 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 Lucy Ann Sutton [image] daughter of Capt. Richard Sutton , shipmaster and Lucy Lord on 26 Jul 1827 in Portsmouth, New Hampshire, USA. They were married on 3 Aug 1827 in Boston, Massachusetts, USA. Lucy was born in 1804 in Portland, Maine, USA. She died 7, 8 on 4 Dec 1888 in Buenos Aires, Argentina, of "an organic failure of the heart," Æ 84. She was buried on 6 Dec 1888 in 2do. Cementerio de Disidentes, Buenos Aires, Argentina. Colonel Charles Bradley, a former resident of this city, died here Wednesday afternoon while on a visit from Lewiston. He was taken ill here, and Dr. Garcelon was telegraphed to attend him. Col. Bradley was born in Andover, Mass., in 1792. He went to Newburyport in 1812 and entered into business there. In 1819 he removed to this city, and for two years was a retail dealer in dry goods, which branch of the trade he then abandoned for the dry goods jobbing trade. In 1825 or 26 he removed to Boston and became senior partner in the firm of Bradley, Savary & Bradley. in 1850 he was appointed US appraiser for the Pacific coast, which position he retained for some time, when he resigned, and going to Lewiston established a flour mill, in which business he continued until his death. He was a gentleman of fine presence and of the strictest integrity. Col. Bradley's first wife was Miss Smith, daughter of Jonathan K. Smith, by whom he had three children, Chief Justice Bradley of Rhode Island, Mrs. Nathaniel Saltonstall Howe, formerly of Haverhill, now of Little Rock, Ark., and Susan Bradley, who died in Jonesville, Michigan. For his second wife he married the only daughter of Dr. Stephen H. Cummings, of this city, a sister of our esteemed fellow citizen Nathan Cummings Esq.* - Argus
Thus has fallen one of the best known and most highly esteemed business men of our city. Col. Bradley has departed at a ripe age, being 82 years old. His noble form upon our streets will be greatly missed, and his genial countenance will be seen no more by his numerous friends in this city, and in Portland, where his family has resided since he has been located here in business. He was in every sense of the word a gentleman of the old school. His conversation was high-toned, courteous, agreeable and always instructive. No man knew better than he the requirements of good society and no one was more punctilious in according to every one, no matter how high or how low, every right to them belonging. His friendship was something to be proud of, and fortunate was the man, young or old, who could have the privilege of social intercourse with our departed friend. He had seen much of the world, and had a ready flow of conversation, which to every man of intelligence with whom he conversed was a source of entertainment and instruction. He was universally esteemed in business circles in this city as a large hearted and liberal-minded man, and those who knew him best will most fully appreciate the loss of the noble Bradley, whom everybody respected and loved almost as a father.- Gazette, Lewiston
*His children by his present wife were Ellen, Mrs. Emily Peters and Fanny. Mrs. Peters only survives him.
Mr. Bradley was well known in Haverhill. His residence for several years has been in Portland. He was a very cordial, sincere man, who made friends and retained them. In all his relations with his fellow men he governed himself, and one man who did business with him for 50 years said "he never knew him to lose his temper," and he never forgot that he was a gentleman. He was a genial companion, and to young people he was peculiarly attractive. They admired him for his good nature, his gentlemanly deportment and his bright and cheerful conversation. Having had much experience in business and acquaintance with men, he could and did entertain his friends in the most agreeable and instructive manner. His memory will be cherished with great respect and consideration.
His father, Jonathan Bradley, had two wives. His first wife was Sarah Osgood, by whom he had seven children - Thomas Osgood, Sarah, Mary, *William, Elizabeth, Jonathan and William. His first wife died Sept. 14, 1790 (*Died when a child) and he married Sally Ayer in 1791, by whom he had six children - Charles, Harrison, James, George, Ann and Susanna. Susanna married Abijah Thayer of Portland, but he moved to Haverhill and established the Haverhill Gazette, of which he was editor and proprietor for several years. Susanna, Mrs. Thayer is the only survivor. William Thayer, who was connected with the New York Post for several years, and who was Consul in Egypt, and died there, was her son, and James Thayer, who has been appointed Law Professor at Harvard College is also her son.

Memorial and Reminiscent
Mrs. S. B. Thayer - Leaf from the Life of Her Husband.
Among the recent incidents of recorded mortality is the death of Mrs. Susan. B. Thayer at her home in Northampton, on Friday last, at the ripe age of 84 years, 5 months. Mrs. Thayer was in early womanhood a resident here, and by her prominent social position will now be well remembered by many of the older residents in this city. She was also connected here by ties of relationship, Mrs. Moses D. George, Mrs. N. S. Howe and Miss Mary F. Whittier being her nieces, and Judge Bradley at Crane Neck, West Newbury, is her nephew. She was born in North Andover, and became the wife of Mr. Abijah W. Thayer in 1824, who was then a resident of Portland, Me., and editor and proprietor of the Independent Statesman. In 1826 the family removed here where they resided until 1885, during which time she was prominently identified in the social, religious and reformatory relations of that time, occupying a leading position in the circle to which by convictions, interest and sympathy, she was drawn. Mrs. Thayer was a woman of strong character and intellect, which rendered her a fitting companion for her husband whose convictions and activity of character led in the line of participation in the prominent political and reformatory movements of that day, and her genial qualities, joined with agreeable social tendencies, placed her in an active position while a resident here. On her removal to Northampton there was no check in the natural flow of spirit, which expressed itself in a lively interest in all the relations which give healthful and agreeable tone to the best interests of a community. Surrounded by a young family, her circle of association widened, and the foundation was laid for the agreeable relations of after life, in the midst of which she became the cherished and esteemed social companion alike of young and old, the practical force of which remained with her until the closing days of life. Her husband died in 1861; a son, who was in early life connected with journalism in New York, subsequently became consul to Egypt, where he died. She leaves a son, Porf. J.B. Thayer of the Harvard law school and, with two members of the immediate family. Her mortal illness was an outcome of a paralytic shock sustained a year ago.
The gathering of a memorial record of this estimable lady leads to a glance at the reminiscent page, upon which are recorded events with which her husband was intimately and prominently associated. Mr. Abijah W. Thayer was a native of Peterborough, N.H., and served his apprenticeship to the printing business in Boston. ln 1817 he was a printer in Andover, at which time he made the ! acquaintance of her, who at e later date became his wedded companion; he also then made the acquaintance of Mr. Caleb Hersey of Haverhill, a fellow journeyman. In January, 1821, Messrs. Nathan Burrill end Caleb Hersey became the proprietors of the Haverhill Gazette, and engaged Mr. Thayer as superintendent of its publication. In 1822 Mr. Thayer located in Portland, Me., becoming the editor and proprietor of the Independent Statesman. In 18216 he returned to Haverhill, becoming the editor and proprietor of the Gazette in 1826, and resided here until 1835; during which time the historic record is, that he was "One of our must active, useful and respected citizens." He was one of the first to enlist in the temperance movements of that day; was the secretary of the first temperance meeting and the first secretary of the first society formed here, in which office he remained until his removal from town. His GAZETTE was the first political paper that ever advocated total abstinence from intoxicating liquors, and the second of any kind adapting that principle, either in America or in the world. His advocacy of the cause in his paper encountered so fierce opposition that in a short time he lost 400 subscribers, but the effect of the agitation was immediately manifest; there were then 29 places in town where liquors were sold, out in five years from that time there was not a single place where it was openly sold, and but out where it was supposed to be sold clandestinely. It is recorded that, "as a political paper, the GAZETTE was at that time classed among the very first in the county and state." In 1832 Mr. Thayer issued a prospectus for publishing a semi-weekly paper, but it was never issued from lack of encouragement. In 1835 he sold the Gazette to Erastus Brooks, and in 1836 John G. Whittier became its editor. ln 1834 Mr. Thayer was the recording secretary of the first anti-slavery Society in this town, of which Hon, Guman Parker was the president and John G. Whittier, the Recording Secretary. In religious associations Mr. Thayer was identified with the Episcopal society, in connection with which, from 1833 to 1835, services were held "mainly through his personal exertions." Upon his removal from here he was temporarily connected with the press in Philadelphia and Worcester but became permanently located in Northampton.

Miss Sarah S. Thayer

A Northampton correspondent (C.S.L.) sends to the Springfield Republican this beautiful tribute to a lady well known in Northampton. Miss Thayer was a daughter of Abijah W. Thayer, for many years an editor here and the editor of the first abolition paper published in Western Massachusetts.
Seldom has the grave opened to receive a more blessed saint than was carried on Friday to the old cemetery in Northampton. A life like that of Miss Sarah Smith Thayer will live on and on forever in the hearts of all who knew her. Talented and accomplished by nature, as well as heritage, with a wonderful poise of character, she ever made her mark in the social an intellectual life of Northampton. Deeply interested in the Unitarian church, her voice and hands united to sustain it. When the Smith college came, she lived almost under its shadow and she was one of the first in gifts. Her contribution is a real prize now. It was Harper’s illustrated Bible, whose plates were destroyed by fire in New York, which lies upon the desk in the chapel were Rev. Dr. L. Clark Seelye presides. In the art gallery of the college hangs the portrait of her brother, William Sidney Thayer, painted by William Hunt. Mr. Thayer was our consul to Egypt; a man of rare gifts, but his life suddenly ended in the midst of great usefulness. The last brother, James Bradley Thayer, received the honor of LL. D. from Harvard college, with which he had so long been connected. Thus Miss Thayer ever had the companionship of highly intellectual men. They are all now dead to sight, but they will live on in our hearts and memory and are carrying on in another world the work that they begun here. Miss Thayer had expressed long ago the wish that when she died some friend would bring the flowers she loved - nasturtiums - to her grave, for they always bloomed for her summer and winter alike. A faithful friend of her youth remembered this wish, and in her hand in the coffin she held some flowers she had planted from her much-loved home. The simple committal service was rendered satisfactorily to the family by Rev. Mr. Kent, and a band of faithful friends with President Seelye saw the earth close over the remains of one of God’s well-beloved saints:--
Thank God the Shepherd is so sweet
Thank God the country is so fair,
We may not draw them from his feet,
We can but rise and meet them there.

“News of the death was recorded this month of Sarah Smith Thayer, who was well known by many of the older residents. [She lived] quietly, until within a few years, at the home of Mrs. Anna L. George, on Summer street, and she was a cousin of Mrs. Thomas Sanders. The father of Miss Thayer, Mr. Abijah W. Thayer, was one of the editors of the Gazette in the early part of the last century. When John Greenleaf Whittier came to the Haverhill academy in 1827 he was offered a home in the family of Mr. Thayer, and to the time of his death the poet retained his friendship for the surviving members of the family.
Miss Thayer presented a complete file of the Gazette, some of which contained earlier poems of Whittier, to the Public library. She was one of the original members of the Whittier club and often gave interesting reminiscences of Whittier’s connection with her family. Miss Thayer was also interested in the Unitarian church…”

3031 M iii William Sydney Thayer was born 1, 2 on 15 Apr 1829 in Haverhill, Massachusetts, USA. He died 3 on 10 Apr 1864 in Alexandria, Egypt.

"Death of William Sydney Thayer ALEXANDRIA, Egypt, April 12.
We have had to lament the loss, after a long illness, of Mr. Thayer, the American Consul-General, who by his integrity and highmindedness had gained the respect of all nationalities, and by the high qualities of his mind and the affability of his manners had won the esteem and affection of those who enjoyed his intimacy. He died on the morning of the 10th, and his funeral took place yesterday."
Ill news travels fast. We cut the above from the Egyptian letter in the London Times of April 21st, received in our files per Scotia last evening.
It is but a few days since we recorded the death at Northampton, after a long and varied life, of Mr. Thayer's father. It now seems that the son preceded him to the other world by a brief number of days.
William Sydney Thayer was born in Haverhill in this State, April 15, 1829. He was prepared for college in Northampton, (which had become his father's residence in 1842) and entered as a sophomore in Harvard College in 1847. He very soon not only became a favorite with his associates but earned the respect and esteem of many gentlemen of education and culture living in this vicinity who observed with interest his progress and the promise of his life. He had always a peculiar faculty of securing the warm sympathy of those with whom he came in contact. At the close of his college term, in 1850, he delivered the class poem on class-day, and received for commencement the unusual honor of an appointment to deliver an English poem.
As these appointments indicate, he had tastes and talents which fitted him for a particular kind of literary life; his poetical compositions were indeed of a high order of merit, and were warmly cherished by his friends; but he steadily resisted the temptation to write poetry. In the brief memoranda which he inscribed in the class-book on graduating he wrote "The course of my future life "is not yet fully determined, but I am strongly inclined to the business of a merchant." He was conscious that he had to hew his own path through the world and would not loiter by the way. He did not however precisely carry out the inclination thus expressed to enter a mercantile life. After a few years spent in this vicinity, partly in giving instruction to private pupils and partly in true study of law, Mr. Thayer was drawn into the vortex of journalism, a profession for which he had remarkable qualifications and in which it is not too much to say that he achieved within a brief period of years an unparalleled success. It was in the year 1853 that he went to the city of New York and entered the office of the "Evening Post" there, as local reporter. He was already well acquainted with Messrs. William C. Bryant and John Bigelow, the accomplished editors of that able journal; and he soon gained their confidence and showed his ability to a degree which caused him frequently to be entrusted in their absence with the principal charge of the paper. His industry and versatility as a journalist were remarkable; he enriched the columns of the paper with valuable contributions in almost every department.
During the last two or three years of his connexion with the "Evening Post," Mr. Thayer acted as the Washington correspondent of that journal; and we have the very best authority for speaking in the highest terms of his success in that difficult vocation. Not only were his letters fresh and interesting; his advices correct, his opinions sound; but he secured the respect of all the leading men at Washington, who gave him their confidence in a degree of unreservedness to which newspaper correspondents are rarely admitted; nobody could make him a tool; everybody about the seat of government desired his acquaintance.
When the present administration came into power, the name of Mr. Thayer was early suggested for appointment to the post of consul-general at Alexandria in Egypt. For this apointment he was most warmly recommended by the highest and most influential names; and his nomination was sent to the Senate among the first that were made, together with those of Mr. Adams as minister to London, and three or four others regarded by the President as conclusively settled on strong grounds of fitness. He was at once confirmed, and proceeded to his post in the course of the summer of 1861. [appointed by Sec. Seward, under Pres. Lincoln]
We have omitted to mention an excursion which Mr. Thayer made at an earlier date, to Central America, in company with Colonel Kinney, [Expedition to Nicaragua] who had conceived a strong admiration of his character and desired his company as historiographer of his "expedition." Mr. Thayer's motive in joining the the party was simply the desire to vary his life by a brief adventure; the vessel was wrecked on the Caicos reef; and afterwards, daring his stay in the pestiferous climate of Central America he contracted disease which impaired his constitution, and deprived him ever afterwards of the enjoyment of sound health.
The winter climate of Egypt was very favorable to his health. Mr. Thayer quickly gained the confidence and esteem of the Viceroy, of his colleagues in the consular corps (most of them gentlemen of more years and of long experience in the diplomatic service) and of the community, as is well expressed in the letter of the London Times above quoted. He very early achieved a remarkable diplomatic success in obtaining an indemnity for injuries inflicted by a Mahometan mob on an agent of the American missionaries, and in other respects his official services were of great value and were cordially approved by his government. His friends hoped that his health was entirely restored, and that a long life of honor and usefulness to the diplomatic service of his country bad opened to him.
An excursion to Cairo, undertaken upon official business in the heat of last summer, however, brought on a severe illness, threatening a sudden and fatal termination. He with difficulty gained sufficient strength to enable him to go to Paris, where in the space of some months his health was sufficiently restored to allow his return to his post of duty in Egypt. This was in December. His letters had given no occasion to apprehend a recurrence of illness, much less the fatal termination of which thus abruptly we have this morning the tidings.
We have left ourselves no space to speak of the character and the talents of the friend whose untimeIy loss we mourn. Nor is it necessary. All who knew him and who loved him can supply what we might say. Few men so perfectly as he, win the confidence and sympathy of all whom they meet; those whom he honored with his friendship have suffered a bitter bereavement of which it would be unseemly to make a public display. What we have said is due to his position as a journalist and a devoted servant of the public.
Mr. Thayer was not married. His mother, a brother and two sisters survive. His life lacked five days of completing thirty-five years.
