2604. Samuel Bradley , farmer & cooper (Abner Bradley , Benjamin Bradley , Benjamin Bradley , Benjamin Bradlee , William , Danyell ) was born on 28 Nov 1784 in New Haven, Connecticut, USA. He died on 18 Nov 1855 in Batavia, Kane Co., Illinois, USA.
In the Spring of 1787, five or six Connecticut families decided to seek new homes somewhere in the wilderness of Central New York. This little band of pioneers reached the vicinity of Clinton, NY on the fourth of March and started a settlement on the site of the present village, which was named by them later in honor of George Clinton, first governor of the state. The little colony was composed largely of Puritan stock, felt the need of church privileges, and in 1792 organized into a church and society, adopting the Congregational form of government, under the title of the Society of Clinton. In 1864, the form of church government was changed to Presbyterian, but the legal title has remained the same.
The 1790 Trade and Intercourse Act prohibited the Oneida Indian Nations from interfering with land developers in New York State. By 1800, the Mohawk and Chenango River valleys were dotted with log cabins.
Lebanon, in Madison County, was formed from Hamilton February 6, 1807. It was one of six towns originally patented to Col. William S. Smith, who soon after transferred the major portion of it to Sir William Pultney, reserving, however, a large tract bordering the Chenango. There were, therefore, two agencies active in promoting the settlement of the lands of this township.
In 1797 Lent Bradley came from Connecticut to settle in this region. In 1831 or 1832, Joel Bradley (Lent’s cousin) moved to Lebanon and became the Reverend at the Clinton Presbyterian Church (near Hamilton College).
In 1831, Samuel Bradley moved his family, by oxcart to Oneida County, near Clinton, New York. There is a probability that other related Bradley families also moved to Oneida County. The Bradleys who settled in Oneida County, NY were Puritans who evolved into Presbyterians. Samuel’s wife, Arena, is buried in Clinton where Joel Bradley was the reverend. Benjamin Franklin Bradley said he was one of Samuel’s eleven children.
As of 2005, the Oneida Nation is still pursuing land claims in Federal courts.
