"Considerable apocrypha have been generated around Porter's Harvard years, some of it seemingly by Porter himself. At 404 Craigie Hall, Cole resided with Dean Acheson, a fellow law student (and future secretary of state), and T. Lawrason Riggs, Yale 1910, who was in the graduate school. '' Later in life Acheson many times repeated "as fact" to his son David a story of how the three young men returned to Craigie Hall one evening, celebrating a theater opening by holding an impromptu champagne party. Probably Porter played the piano, and the others may have shouted out songs. Next morning neighbors called the law school to complain about the late-night noise, and Dean Ezra Ripley Thayer summoned the culprits and threatened to expel them. Acheson insisted to his son that Cole went subsequently to see Dean Thayer and offered to leave the law school if the others would be allowed to continue. All the parties agreed to this arrangement.
Talking to Louis Sobol twenty-five years later, Porter said, "One day I was at a party and I played a piece I had written and the dean of the Law School said 'Porter-don't waste your time-get busy and study music.' " This sounds nearer the truth and is corroborated by an unidentified newspaper cutting in which Porter is quoted: "I'm used to being sat on in Boston. If Dean Thayer of Harvard hadn't been so thorough in refusing to admit that I could ever become a lawyer I might never have become a song writer. If he hadn't been so sure I could never become a judge in law-I might never have become such a good judge of other things. As a matter of fact he suggested I try song writing. So I took up music with a swell recommendation from the Dean of Harvard's Law School! Anyway I only studied law to please my father [grandfather?]." Cole had entered Harvard Law School on
September 22, 1913, and he left on June 14, 194. Dean Thayer then arranged
his transfer to the Harvard School of Music. He had received the equivalent of present-day D's in Contracts, Criminal Law, Torts, and Civil Procedure.
In time Cole made up a song about 404 Craigie and his life there:In four-o-four
On the second floor
Lives a crazy Craigie crowd.
They play all day,
All night they play.
No work is there allowed.
Away with law.
It's an awful bore
Their war cry rings out clear.Some of the sounds emerging from 404 Craigie that year may have been the efforts to put together Paranoia, a show Cole had promised to do for his fraternity's smoker before he left New Haven in spring 1913- Professor "Billy" Phelps opened the smoker, calling the authors "the Gilbert and Sullivan combination of collegiate dramatics." Indeed, both Porter and Riggs (who wrote the book and some of the lyrics) were worshipers of Gilbert and Sullivan, whose impact on Porter was lasting."
