GEORGE F. COMINGS (Obituary) George F. Comings, age 70, of Tuscarora Avenue, Niagara Falls NY, and Sarasota FL, died Friday, 25 January 2002 in the Niagara Falls Memorial Medical Center after a long illness. Born in Oxford NY, on 12 May 1931. He was the son of the late George H. and Catherine (Evans) Comings.
During his youth Mr. Comings lived and worked on his father's dairy farm in Coventry, NY. He was a graduate of Afton High School. He served in the Army from 1954 to 1955, working in administration at Fort Benning GA. He received Bachelors and Masters degrees in music education from SUNY Potsdam in 1953 and 1963. He worked for 33 years as a high school music teacher, mostly in Corinth NY, where he directed many concerts and musical productions, and taught strings, band, chorus, and jazz groups.
Mr. Comings was a member of the Corinth Rotary Club for many years, where he was a club president, a Paul Harris Fellow, and a coordinator of the student exchange program. He was active in churches for most of his life as an organist, soloist, and choir director. For sixteen years he sang in the Saratoga Potsdam Choral Institute with the Philadelphia Orchestra, under distinguished directors and conductors such as Brock McElheran, Eugene Ormandy, and Robert Shaw. For many years, Mr. Comings worked as an adjudicator for New York State School Music Association competitions. He sang in the televised Statue of Liberty Centennial Celebration in 1986. George enjoyed musical instruments, playing many, and had built a harpsichord. He designed and built the family home in Corinth where he and his wife lived with their sons. He was a life-long blood donor, giving over 15 gallons. He married Dorothy Jane Cummings in Massena NY, on 14 June 1953.The honeymooned in Niagara Falls.
Survived by his wife of 49 years, Dorothy Jane Comings, father of Stephen G. (Marcia Ann) of Wheatfield NY, and Benjamin Daniel (Elaine) Comings of Parsippany NJ, exchange Student Takaomi C. Saido of Saitama, Japan, brother of Robert (Perra) Comings of Canastota NY, Catherine Bickford of Norwich NY, Anne Thomas of Sackets Harbor NY, and the late Ruth Gibson, James, and Philip Comings. Grandfather of Elizabeth, Ian, and Renee Comings. Also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.
George married Dorothy Jane Cummings 1.
