"Whenever our country was in a crisis Methuen has answered the call. On April 12, 1861, Confederate troops fired on Fort Sumter. A few days later the Federal troops defending the fort were forced to surrender. With the fall of Fort Sumter four years of bloody conflict began. The country was on the verge of collapse and newly elected President Abraham Lincoln called for hundreds of thousands of troops to help preserve the Union. A large number of regiments from Massachusetts were raised. The Fourteenth Massachusetts Volunteers was one of those regiments. Raised in Essex County, the regiment became known as the Essex Regiment and Company B was the Methuen Company.
Leverett Bradley, a farmer from Methuen, was asked by the selectmen to form a company of volunteers in Methuen. Bradley was prominent in the militia in Lawrence and was perfect for the task. Enlistments were for three years and he had no problems recruiting for the company. On June 15, Company B left Methuen for garrison duty in the forts around Washington D.C. Before they left, David Nevins donated material from his rebuilt Pemberton Mill in Lawrence so that the Company could be outfitted properly.
Garrison duty was lonely and boring. Little comfort had been provided for the soldier. One of the highlights, though, was during the spring of 1862 when Charles H. Tenney visited Company B in camp near Washington. He presented a revolver to Captain Leverett Bradley from the " Citizens of Methuen."
Eventually, camp life became more tolerable. Elaborate barracks were built as was a dance hall. The regiment even sponsored a library for the soldiers. Because Company B was located first in line on the way from Washington, visiting dignitaries visited them first. President Lincoln, Massachusetts Governor Andrew and Julia Ward Howe were some of the dignitaries who came.
Sometime in 1862 the regiment began training as artillery men. Muskets were put aside and cannon were put in its place. From 1862 until they were called into action in 1864 all training was focused on handling the cannon and mortars. In fact, the 14th Regiment Massachusetts Volunteers were officially notified of the change on September 19, 1863. On that date they were known as the 1st Massachusetts Heavy Artillery.
In March 1864, President Lincoln appointed General Ulysses Grant as head of the Army of the Potomoc. Grant had a reputation as a fierce General and willing to accept large numbers of casualties. This was something the South could not afford to do.
On Saturday morning May 14, 1864 Company B, along with the rest of the regiment, were once again given muskets and told they were going to the front. These relatively green troops who had spent the last two years training as artillery men were now told they would fight as infantry. Company B left for the front that evening. Three days later, after traveling by steamer and then marching 23 miles, Company B and the Regiment arrived near a little town in south east Virginia known as Spottsylvania Courthouse. Confederate General Ewell was making an attempt to capture the Union supply train and general headquarters. 1st Massachusetts was sent to stop him.
The Company arrived about 1 am and was met by the sobering site of long lines of ambulances bringing the wounded from the fighting nearby at the "Bloody Angle." At 6 am they were marched about a mile or more to form a line of battle supporting an artillery battery which was in action. They stayed there until 4 pm while Rebel shells passed overhead. At noon on May 19, 1864 fighting could be heard in the distance and Company B, along with the rest of the regiment, were moved two miles to a farm were Rebel cavalry were spotted. One soldier wrote: "It was like a stroke of lightning from clear skies. In an instant the scene was transformed from peace and quiet to one of pain and horror." The confederates attacked with savagery. The same soldier later wrote, "The cries of pain from loved comrades, wounded or dying; the rattle of musketry; the sound of leaden missiles tearing through the trees and the dull thud of bullets that reached their human marks produced a feeling of horror among those whose ears could hear." Fighting became intense. The Methuen Company attacked the Confederates hoping to push them out of the area. Attack after attack was stopped by General Ewell's forces. Company B and the 1st Massachusetts Heavy Artillery were unable to push the Confederates back. Amidst the carnage Company B held its ground. Eventually fresh Union troops joined the attack and by morning the Confederates were forced to withdraw.
On the fields of Harrris' Farm lay the dead and dying of the battle. Confederate And Union. Losses to Company B from Methuen appeared to be the highest in the regiment. In this battle alone 15 men died. Nearly 35 men were wounded and eleven men died in captivity at the infamous prison camp at Andersonville. When word reached Methuen about the losses the community took it hard. The community sent representatives to Virginia to look after the wounded. This battle was to be the last major engagement of the Battle of Spottsylvania Courthouse.
Company B continued to fighting battles in places like Cold Harbor, Petersburg and Appomattox. In all 325 Methuen men answered President Lincoln's call. More than was expected of the community. 52 of those lost their lives in defense of the Union. Many more had their lives change forever as a result of the war. The commitment and sacrifice of these soldiers should serve as a reminder that freedom is a fragile thing purchased with the blood of those who stood in defense of it. Monuments in Methuen and Virginia stand today as a memorial to that sacrifice and their commitment to the Union."

"James Frye House, 176-178 Merrimack Street, 1775.
According to the previous inventory form, this farm house was built in 1775 by James Frye. By 1846 it was owned by Leverett Bradley. The map of 1884 identifies Mrs. L. Bradley as the owner. It was apparently no longer a working farm by 1914 for at that time the house was occupied by Ernest Barraclough, a mill operative. By 1918 it was the home of John Howarth, a laborer. It is not known exactly when the house was converted to a two-family dwelling but it was likely in the mid-20th century."

"CAPTAINS Leverett Bradley, farmer; 47; Methuen; July 5, '61; dis. Sept. 19, '62 ; d. June 17, '80, Methuen. Born Mar. 22, '14, at Haverhill, son of Captain Brickett and Hannah (Merrill) Bradley. He was a tireless, progressive farmer, and carried projects to a conclusion that would have staggered more conservative minds. In '57 he received from the Essex County Agricultural Society a special reward for the reclamation of forest boglands, so treacherous that draughtmen had to be employed instead of horses or oxen; in '50 he followed the forty-niners to California, after the discovery of gold, acting as the first forwarding agent of Wells Fargo Express Co. across the Isthmus of Panama. When a young man he joined the state militia and rose by gradual promotion from the ranks to be a lieutenant in Co. F of the 6th Regiment, M. V. M., and in '59 and '60 was captain of Co. I, same regiment. In '61, on the breaking out of the rebellion, he recruited Co. K of Lawrence and then was called by the selectmen of Methuen to recruit in that town what later became Co. B of the 14th Infantry; Govenor Andrew commissioned him captain. As a militia officer before the war, he had a part in the great encampment projected and held on the plains of Concord in '59. When the body of Private S. H. Needham, k. in Baltimore, April 19, '61, was returned to Lawrence, Captain Bradley commanded the escort at the burial. After the war he raised and commanded an independent troop of cavalry which participated in the celebration of the 150th anniversary of the incorporation of Methuen, '75."
